Visas / Working Holiday Maker

Visas

When travelling to another country you may require a visa to gain entry.   This may be determined by a number of factors, such as how long you plan to stay, agreements between your country and the destination country and whether you will be seeking work.

For example if you are from the UK and are travelling to New Zealand, you do not require a visa for stays up to 6 months.   However you do require a passport that is valid for 3 months after your intended date of departure, a return or onward ticket and sufficient money to support your stay.

So check with the immigration departments of the countries you intend to visit before you go to find out if you need to apply in advance or upon entry. Many travel agents such as STA Travel or Trailfinders can arrange your visa application(s) when you book your trip.   Our country guides include brief visa requirements that you can use as a guide.

Working Holiday Maker (WHM)

Many countries have reciprocal Working Holiday Maker arrangements that allow you to work under certain conditions as part of your stay.   Check with the immigration departments of the countries you intend to visit to see if you can get this type of visa.   The general theme of this type of visa is that you work to support your travels but is not the main reason for your stay.

For example, travellers from the UK going to Australia can get a WHM visa for up to 12 months, however you cannot work longer than 3 months with one employer.   Aussies get a better deal, staying in the UK for up to 2 years with a 12 month limit on working.   Although many people try to get around these limitations, it is worth noting that you could get deported for flouting these rules.

Citizens of any European member state can travel and work without restriction within the EU.
