Despite the increased reach of today's traveller, the Pitcairn Islands stand out as one of those truly remote places and its history dates back over 3500 years.

Population levels an ever present issue, the islands are now inhabited by about 50 people, descendants of Tahiti and the Bounty Mutineers.   For those who haven't seen one of the films, in 1787 the HMS Bounty sailed from England to Tahiti.   Some of the sailors got a little too used to the sun and local female charms, and mutinied.   To avoid detection from the British fleet, they fled to the Pitcairn Islands in 1790 and descendants of the sailors live there today.

The island became a British colony in 1838 and although limited in what it can offer the traveller, there are interesting ancient Polynesian artefacts and mutiny history.   But then if you are looking to really get away, the Pitcairn's are for you.
