| ‘Behold! The Coconut!’
is the literal translation of Niue due to the island’s
ability to grow the coconut palm. It is one of the largest
emerged coral atolls in the world and is different to
most islands in the Pacific in that it has secluded coves
instead of the typical sandy coastline.
Captain Cook’s moniker for the place was Savage
Island but he couldn’t have been more wrong as
Niueans are extremely friendly and you’ll be assured
of a wave and a smile from anyone you meet.
The island is made of limestone and has no lakes or
streams, meaning there’s little run off
into the sea providing some of the best visibility
for diving in the world. The abundance of marine
life coupled with amazing rock formations make
Niue one of the dive destinations.
