Unlike many of the other Pacific
Islands, it is not hard to see why France is unwilling
to let go of this enclave, the ‘Paris of the Pacific’.
While the best of French is evident in the language, cuisine
and cosmopolitan atmosphere, the Melanesian traditions
and culture has been preserved and can be experienced
more on the east coast and outlying islands.
Blessed with the world’s second largest coral
reef, New Caledonia offers stunning diving, snorkelling
and swimming in particular on the east coast and Loyalty
Islands. The Isle of Pines also offers great diving
and pristine beaches.
The capital Noumea provides the joie de vivre with
boutique shops, cafes and restaurants although
you won’t find it the cheapest place in
the Pacific. Make the effort to get out of town
and over to the Loyalty Islands.
