Nauru has little to offer
the traveller, unless you’re interested in phosphate
or studying the merits of an Australian offshore detention
centre (all essays gladly received). The bounty of phosphate
ore has made the country wealthy, but the result is an
ecological mess and now the funds are quickly running
out.
This may all change over time, as the government could
realise the potential for making the island more attractive
to travellers. It does have great potential and Nauru’s
appeal lies offshore with plentiful WWII wreck diving.
The local culture has almost been forgotten with religion
being replaced by Aussie rules football, so don’t
expect an authentic Pacific experience.
