Three groups of islands make
up Kiribati, Gilbert Islands, Phoenix Islands and the
Northern Line Islands. Typifying the remote island paradise,
Kiribati is more sea than land and has a great number
of WWII wrecks among the coral reefs making it a great
place for diving.
This is true backpacking territory, as there are few
tourist and is the kind of place you need to arrange
your own activities, or just chill out under a palm
or two.
Abemama was home to Robert Louis Stevenson for a time
in 1889, and the British first raised the flag
here in 1892. It nearly became the capital, but
was dropped in favour of Tarawa after WWII due
to access through the reef.
