Guam is a US outpost with
15% of the population being made up of US military personnel
and their dependants. Its roots lay in the Chamorro of
Malay origin, before a healthy dose of Spanish Catholicism
decimated the population. The Spanish soldiers and Filipino
men were brought in to build the population.
After the US took over Guam in the last years of the
19th century, it continued to build up its forces here,
losing it for 31 months to the Japanese in WWII.
Although heavily influenced by US culture, there is
still a thriving amount of local traditions. There
are plenty of historic buildings, but it’s
not the cheapest destination unless you’re
after duty-free.
