The Cook Islands consist of 15 islands located in the Pacific Ocean. They lie in the centre of the Polynesian Triangle, flanked to the west by the Kingdom of Tonga and Samoa and to the east by Tahiti and the islands of French Polynesia.
Rarotonga is
the main island and population centre and therefore accounts
for a large proportion of the country’s tourism. The other tourist
centre is Aitutaki which has a stunning lagoon offering
excellent snorkelling and a base to visit the neighbouring
atolls.
As you may expect, the main activities are water-based,
with scuba diving, snorkelling, windsurfing and boat
tours in abundance. Hiking is also popular getting a
chance to view the amazing formations and vegetation,
where avocados, bananas and grapefruit grow.
To experience the culture and lifestyle
away from the tourist trail, head to either Atiu,
Mauke and Mangaia.
