Queensland

Beautiful one day, perfect the next!   With sun, outback, sand, surf, reef and rainforest, Queensland has a lot to offer for travellers looking for outdoor adventure or relaxation.   The main attraction is undoubtedly the Great Barrier Reef, stretching some 2300km from Lady Elliot Island up to Papua New Guinea.

Cairns is the gateway to the reef with tours to reef islands, diving and deep sea fishing to get you started.   Also known as the backpacker's mecca due to its nightlife, seafood lovers will find it hard to leave.   Further down the coast, Mission Beach and Magnetic Island are must sees.   If you're cash rich and time poor, a stop over at Hamilton Island in the Whitsundays will blow you away.

If you are driving Airlie Beach is the town that connects you to Shoute Harbour with ferries out to the islands for day trips.   Further south a stop at Harvey Bay allows you to indulge in a spot of whale watching.   On the Sunshine Coast, Noosa is a popular place for surfing and the capital of triathlon.

The capital of Queensland is Brisbane, a laid back urban centre where you can easily find casual work to supplement your travels and enjoy the lively social scene.   Kick up a gear on the Gold Coast, Australia's Miami, with over 40km of unbroken beach and about 300 days of sunshine each year.   Just don't expect a relaxing time as the partying hardly stops among the many high-rise apartment blocks and entertainment venues.
