From the Red Centre up north
to the Top End, the Northern Territory is the epitome
of the Outback. The contrast between cosmopolitan Darwin
and the ancient icon Uluru (Ayers Rock) makes the Northern
Territory a great place to explore.
In the Red Centre you will get a real sense of the
mysticism surrounding Uluru, a 348m high sandstone
monolith located 440km south-west of Alice Springs.
Managed by the Anangu people, the traditional
landowners, and Parks Australia, it is possible
to climb Uluru however the Anangu prefer people
not to climb due to its spiritual significance.
There are guided walks around the base and you
can get an insight into this place from local
people telling the Dreamtime stories. The appearance
of Uluru changes depending on the time of day,
weather, dust and where you view it from. Sunset
is a great time to see it changing from deep red
to orange to lilac in appearance.
Also here is Watarrka National Park, which is home to
Kings Canyon, a towering chasm over 250m high which
shelters palm forests. >> More
