This collection of seven islands, hidden away from the world, is a contrast of American consumerism and traditional pacific island way of life. Administered by the US since 1899, it shares the history and culture of Samoa, situated about 100km to the northwest.
Thankfully, big SUVs, fast food joints and cable TV give way to stunning coastlines flanked by mountain peaks and provide the opportunity to explore the rich archaeology, unique ecology or lose yourself in the local customs.
The islands to the east, Ofu and Olosega, are well worth a trip for snorkelling on the reef, enjoying traditional family-style meals and just relaxing on the white sands.
