Vatican City is owned by the Catholic Church and for its size is probably the richest independent state in the world. It has the grandest and most wonderful collection of master art works ever seen. The architecture, murals and ornamental sculptures will take your breath away.
Inside is the Sistine Chapel where Michelangelo spent 4 years painting the ceiling, the most famous fresco being the Creation of Adam. Frescos surround you in the Chapel, from many of the premier painters of the time, such as Botticelli.
Pope Benedict XVI now resides over the Catholic Church after the much-loved Pope John Paul II passed away in 2005.
