Like many central European
states Slovakia has a potted history, with major changes
with the two World Wars. Despite its partisan uprising
in WWII, its Nazi links forced integration into Czechoslovakia
after the war. Unrest continued as a surge of Slovak nationalism
swept the region, leading to the international community
recognising the Slovak Republic in 1993.
The capital city, Bratislava, is the obvious destination
for tourists with a vibrant café culture and
beautiful monuments in the old town. The beer and wine
production goes back centuries and is well worth a taste!
Slovakia is a great place for snow sports and hiking
and the tourist industry for these activities
is steadily increasing.
