Portugal has a rich traditional
in exploration and the sea, at one time leading the world
in the exploration of the Americas and Africa. The country
has a lot to offer the seasoned traveller, from well-developed
beach resorts and golf courses in the Algarve to rural
areas largely untouched by modern development in the last
century.
The religious pilgrimages, festivals and fairs can
take over whole towns with Carnaval being one
of the most notable. It happens about six weeks
before Easter where people parade through the
streets with painted faces. This continues during
Easter week with more large colourful festivals.
