The impact of the two World Wars on Poland is still in evidence, however the country is slowing rebuilding itself and with membership of the EU in 2004, the future is bright.
Its capital, Warsaw, took a real battering in WWII and the city is now quite a modern landscape. Thankfully not all is a dull Stalinist concrete jungle with a reconstructed 'Old Town' now on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
You cannot mention Poland without touching on Oawiecim, better known as Auschwitz. The largest Nazi concentration camp serves as a shocking reminder of what mankind is capable of.
The religious pilgrimages, festivals and fairs can
take over whole towns with Carnaval being one
of the most notable. It happens about six weeks
before Easter where people parade through the
streets with painted faces. This continues during
Easter week with more large colourful festivals.
