Having been passed around
Eastern Europe, conquered, broken up, reunified, broken
up again, gained independence, Moldova is now struggling
to retain its size with Transdniestr in the northeast
seceding and declaring loyalty to Russia and only just
keeping hold of the Gagauz community in the south.
Moldova has influences from Russia, Turkey and Romania
(where reunification remains an ongoing issue) with
monasteries (a 14th century example is at Capriana -
with monks!) and fortresses.
Wine is of huge importance to Moldovans with the biggest
vineyards in Eastern Europe. The wine is good
too, which is lucky since the food hails from
the Russian watery, tasteless variety.
