Situated about 100km from
Sicily in the Mediterranean Sea, the Maltese Islands consist
of Malta, Gozo and Comino. Malta has a rich history dating
back to 5000 B.C. with Arabs, The Knights of St John and
the British. It gained its independence in 1964 after
it played a pivotal role in WWII, which gained its population
the George Cross for valour.
This rich historical vein is matched by a well-developed
tourism industry that thankfully has not spoilt the
islands. The islands offer great diving for beginners
and experts alike with warm seas all year round and
a variety of caves, shipwrecks and reefs.
And no, the book and film ‘The Maltese Falcon’
has nothing to do with Malta.
