The Former Yugoslav Republic
of Macedonia seems a little misplaced, as the majority
of ancient Macedonia is actually in Greece with some in
Bulgaria. The issue of the country’s official name
and potential claims to ancient Macedonia still rumbles
on with Greece today.
There are plenty of impressive monuments to be seen
here, with examples of Roman development scattered around
the country. A good place to see this is at the Ruins
of Herculea at Bitola, a mix of Greek and Roman ruins.
The breathtaking landscape of Lake Ohrid, Europe’s
deepest, provides some stunning vistas and along
with more Roman ruins and cultural monuments making
Ohrid Macedonia’s top tourist location
