After Irish monks stopped
using Iceland as a holiday destination, legend has it
that a Norwegian Viking, Ingólfur Arnarson, was
the first permanent settler in the 9th Century. The settlers
founded one of the first republican governments in 930
which lasted for over 300 years before Iceland lost its
independence.
Iceland’s amazing landscape is a result of the
glacial erosion and volcanic eruptions. There are hot
springs, waterfalls, lava landscapes and Europe’s
largest glacier to be explored.
Don’t be put off by the sound of putrefied shark
meat (hákarl) or ram’s testicles,
the fare in Icelandic restaurant’s is top
notch especially the seafood on the menu.
