One of the smallest countries
in Europe, Albania is known for its wild mountain scenery.
Lake Shkodra is the largest lake, while Lake Ohrid is
one of Europe’s deepest. Lake Ohrid is shared with
Macedonia. The Drini is the main river.
There is plenty of architecture to be seen, ranging
from the relatively recent Communist era through to
the Turkish fortresses, aqueducts and mosques from the
Ottoman occupation between 1400 and 1800.
Visitors to this country should exercise great care
as security can be an issue. The north-east of
the country should be avoided, with unexploded
ordnance scattered throughout the region bordering
Kosovo.
